The goal of laser hair reduction is to force the active hair follicles (in anagen) to then separate from the papilla via laser pulse. The hair is forced into the catagen phase, which will then move to the telogen and exogen phases, completing the shed. This retrains the hair growth cycle so that your hair follicles will then be dormant instead of following anagen phases. Our hair follicles are not all on the same growth cycle. Some of our hairs are being shed whilst others are still so small that they can’t be seen above the skin – but they’re growing every day. Each time you come in for a laser treatment we are treating only the active follicles and hairs that the laser can sense. You will then see shedding for the following 3-7 days as the hairs approach telogen from the forced catagen state.
This process takes some time to figure out with each client. Most people need about 4-6 treatments for optimal results, and treatments are typically spread 4-6 weeks apart depending on the treatment area. The hair may grow back years down the road when the dormant follicle awakens, but if it does the hair is extremely fine, and most people don’t even realize they have hair growing in! Retreatment may be necessary, follow up with your aesthetic laser technician as needed.
Prior to your appointment we ask that you please shave the area to be treated ( a 5 o'clock shadow or light stubble is preferred). This will ensure a thorough treatment as the laser energy will not be wasted on the length of the hair shaft and the follicle will be better targeted.
Discontinue the use of retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or any active skincare products 5 days before your laser treatment. You may continue using them 4 days afterwards.
Keep the treatment area out of the sun for 3 weeks prior to your appointment. When going out be sure to apply SPF of 35+ with a zinc content of 25 or more.
If you are on or have been on a photosensitizing medication we are unable to perform a laser treatment. We require 10-14 days of your being off of any such medication before we can treat your skin.
If you are or have taken Accutane in the past year, we are unable to treat your skin.
After your treatment you may shave any singed or curled hairs. You must use a new razor to prevent folliculitis or potential infection.
No saunas, hot tubs, steam showers, or excessive heat following your treatment for 1 week.
No public pools for 1 week following your treatment.
Keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight for 2 weeks following your appointment.
When going out be sure to apply SPF of 35+ with a zinc content of 30 or more.
